Judge Sheldon Sobol

Sheldon R. Sobol is a Circuit Judge in Grundy County, Illinois. He received a B.A. in Education and a B.S. in Political Science from Northern Illinois University. Judge Sobol graduated from The John Marshall Law School in 1991. Initially, Judge Sobol worked at the Firm of James D. Montgomery and Associates in Chicago and subsequently with the firm of Gomien, Harrop and Sobol in Morris. In September 2001 Judge Sobol was appointed as State’s Attorney for Grundy County. He was subsequently elected as State’s Attorney in 2002, 2004 and 2008. In March 2011, Judge Sobol was appointed as an Associate Circuit Judge in Grundy County and served in that position until December of 2020 when he was elected as Resident Circuit Judge.
As State’s Attorney, Judge Sobol participated in founding Grundy County’s Drug Court. While State’s Attorney, Judge Sobol served on the Board of Governors for the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor and was President of the Illinois State’s Attorney’s Association. In addition to his other duties, he currently presides over the Grundy County Drug Court.
Judge Sobol was appointed to the Illinois Courts Commission in 2022. He is also a Member of the Illinois Supreme Court Judicial Mentor Committee and the Illinois Judicial College Committee on Probation Education. He previously served on the Illinois Supreme Court Judicial Performance Evaluation Committee.
He is married to Laurie Sobol and is a father of three.
